The Lodges’ location means you can easily access a varied array of surf spots, where the team can find the perfect waves for your skill level.
After your daily surf, you can relax & unwind poolside while enjoying a drink from the onsite bar, discover some of the tourist attractions in the area, or take part in a yoga session. Regardless of what you decide on, you are guaranteed to thoroughly enjoy your trip to Portugal.
The small seaside town of Santa Cruz is easily accessible in a few minutes on foot, bike or car from the lodge. Santa Cruz has a great selection of high quality restaurants that cater to every taste. The team can recommend the authentic local cuisine, which is amazing, and uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients combined with the freshest seafood. There are also a variety of bars and cafés in town where you can relax after eventful days surfing, and exploring Portugal.
Santa Cruz also has a good selection of shops where you can buy souvenirs, surf equipment and any other items you may want.
Pro Surfer & WSL Contests
The coast around the lodge is classed as a World Surf Reserve by the internationally recognised Save the Waves Coalition because of the huge selection of surf spots & constant waves. Every year 5 major surf contests are held in the area including the second to last stop of the WSL, the Quiksilver Pro, so if you time your trip well, you will get to see the best in the world battle it out only meters away from the beach.
The way the coast is shaped, and the rugged cliffs that line the beach, mean that regardless of the conditions, the local team can always find a wave that is perfect for your skill level.
Originally from Italy, Sonny is the quintessential surfer dude. He’s relaxed, funny, a great surfer, an even better coach, and extremely motivated and hard working. He’s been surfing on the European Pro Longboard Tour but is slowly shifting his focus entirely on the lodge. He’s a qualified beach lifeguard and ISA level 2 surf instructor. Also, his real name is Andy.
When you visit Surf Lodge Santa Cruz you have the option of booking 4 & 6 person rooms that are perfect to accommodate solo travellers who don’t mind sharing a room, or larger groups & families. There are two 4-person rooms in total, one of which has its own bathroom, the other shares a bathroom with a double room across the hall. There is one 6-person rooms which has a private bathroom.
The entire building has been freshly renovated & furnished, meaning all the furniture, beds & mattresses are new. The rooms also come with a sound system, Wi-Fi and fresh towels & linen.
There are Double Rooms available at Surf Lodge Santa Cruz that come with one large double bed, perfect for couples, or the Twin Single option where you have two comfortable single beds, perfect for friends looking for a Portuguese getaway. You can choose if you would like your own private bathroom, or a shared bathroom in both the twin single & double rooms.
The entire Surf Lodge Santa Cruz has been remodelled and all of the furniture throughout has been upgraded. Each of the rooms has also been equipped with a sound system and you have Wi-Fi access throughout. Fresh towels & linen are also included for all the guests.
At the heart of the lodge is an open plan lounge where you can relax, watch a movie or stream an international surf contest. There is also a small bar where drinks & snack are available. The team also show the daily pictures of you out in the surf in the lounge so you can check your picture, while enjoying a cold drink & getting to know the other guests.
Outside you have a large pool surrounded by a terraced area perfect for enjoying the endless sunshine of Portugal. Next to the pool area you also have a manicured garden which you can enjoy anytime throughout your stay.

Surf Course Basic (15h)
The 15-Hour surf course is spread over 5 days and includes 2 surf sessions per day. Each of the 5 days you’ll spend in-between 3-4 hours in the water. Every morning the team take you to the desired surf spot for a more intensive session, with the team giving you lots of pointer and things to work on. Then the second session is more laid back and you work on what you learnt in the morning. There will also be 2 theory lessons back in the lodge as well as some video coaching.

*During peak season: Booking a surf course is mandatory. If you are travelling with a family, or group of 8 or more people, then at least 50% have to book a surf course.
Surf Guiding (low season)
The Surf Guiding option is only available in the Low Season at Surf Lodge Santa Cruz. It enables you to surf as much as possible during your stay, with the helpful guidance of local surfers who will take you to the best waves, show you the ins & outs of each break including where the best channels are for paddling out, where the best take-off spots are, and which waves will break the best.
There are at least 10 guided surf sessions offered by the crew every week, during 3 of these sessions the crew will take video camera and take some footage so you can see yourself surf back camp, work on any problem you recognise, and enjoy an amazing souvenir of your trip to Portugal.
If you choose to take part in the Surf Guiding option you can surf as much as you want, or can, in a week. The crew make sure to find the best waves and don’t mind taking a drive down the coast to Caparica roughly an hour away, or as far north as Ferrel which is 40 minutes. If your skill level and the conditions line up they may even take you to Peniche or Ericeira.
Surf guiding is only available in the low season.

During the Low Season it is possible to rent a surfboard and wetsuit from Surf Lodge Santa Cruz who have a large selection of surfboards with a variety of shapes and sizes. There are longboards as well as high performance short boards available and even a few retro fish and alternative twin fins. The team also have a selection of wetsuits to fit everybody. The crew are all passionate, experienced surfers and can help you pick out the right board for your skill level, the type of waves you’ll be riding, and your size.
Surfboard rental is only available during the low season, and to surfers over 18 years of age who have more than 4 weeks surfing experience.

With a huge selection of surf spots to choose from, and a well-informed, local crew, you are guaranteed to score some fun waves during your trip to Portugal. If you’re a beginner the team usually take you down to Praia Azul, Santa Cruz or Santa Rita which are all beach breaks perfect for learners and advanced surfers alike. There are over 30 waves in the area and the surf coaches know how to read the weather charts perfectly to find the best waves for you and your skill level. You also have two more world famous surf regions nearby, Peniche and Ericeira north and south of the camp, so you have unlimited possibilities to catch the waves of your life.
Breakfast is included
The team at Surf Lodge Santa Cruz provide a stunning daily breakfast buffet that will greet you every morning when you wake up. The buffet utilises the large variety of locally grown ingredients available to provide you with the energy you need to sustain you through the rigorous daily surf sessions.
Breakfast consists of fresh bread, locally sourced fruit & muesli as well as freshly brewed coffee, tea & juice.
Dinner can be booked additionally
Surf Lodge Santa Cruz offer an inclusive dinner on the night of arrival, as well as the option of booking 4 extra nights dinner for 59 €, to take the hassle and stress out of your evenings. The cook prepares fresh, delicious, home-cooked meals using locally sourced ingredients. Not only is the food amazing, but it is also a great opportunity to mingle fellow guests & surfers, as well as the crew. Each meal is served with an aperitif, as well as water and one beer, wine or soft drink. During your stay, at least once a week the BBQ will get fired up. The price for four evenings dinner is 59€.
Surfing and Yoga complement one another perfectly. When you practice yoga you will improve balance and core strength, the ability to control breath and general flexibility, which will in turn improve all aspects of your surfing. Yoga also clears the mind and makes relaxing and really getting into the holiday mood possible.
At Surf Lodge Santa Cruz you can choose to take a yoga class with a qualified instructor for 15 €. These classes cater to full-fledged yogis as well as first timers and focus on working on areas that will improve your surfing.
4 yoga sessions cost 55€ and a single class is 15€.
The team at Surf Lodge Santa Cruz have bikes available for guests to borrow. This is a perfect way to discover the stunning coastline around the lodge, take a trip to town to go shopping or enjoy a seaside meal, or even take your surfboard and find a new surf spot for that evening surf session.
There are plenty of options to enjoy during your stay at Surf Lodge Santa Cruz including trips to Sintra, Obidos, Nazaré as well as to check out the WSL Surf Contest that takes place once a year. Every trip offered can be booked onsite once you arrive.
Sintra was classified a UNESCO World Heritage because of its many architectural monuments including castles, forts & palaces with history dating back to the turn of the 11th century. The city gives an insight into Portuguese culture and history. The town is also set amongst a stunning landscape with the Atlantic Ocean nearby. The day trip costs 20 €.
Óbidos is a small walled in village along on a small hill near the coast that dates back to the year 713. Once you make it inside the fortifications you will find yourself inside a city once owned by the queen of Portugal, who predominantly stayed in the town during her rule. The city is immaculately kept and restored. A trip here costs 15€.
A wave Garrett McNamara surfed at Nazaré, measuring approximately 100ft, currently holds the world record for biggest wave ever surfed. If the swell charts start to flash red, you will see pro big wave surfers from around the world flock to the spot and write a bit of history. If you also happen to be there, you can surf a nice sheltered wave in the morning, then head down and watch mountainous waves roll in from the Atlantic and explode of the coast from the safety of the lighthouse. The trip cost depends on the number of participants.
The WSL (World Surf League) moves to a surf spot called Supertubos near Peniche on the west coast of Portugal. There is also a WSL a qualification series at the nearby Guincho, as well as a Big Wave Tour visit Nazaré. If there is a competition on during your surf trip, the crew will definitely tell you about it because they love showing the guests the pros surf and also enjoy watching themselves. The price again depends on how many people go.

Shuttle services from Lisbon Airport, Torres Vedras or Ericeira Bus Station are one-way and the price is divided amongst passengers.

In a car the trip will take around 30 minutes form the airport to the lodge, whereas public transport will take around 2.5 hours. Best way once you arrive if you plan to use public transport is to leave the airport and get on the purple metro line to Lisboa Oriente. Once there you should get off the metro and go to Portale de Sintra. Once you have arrived here, you will need to change bus and go to Ericeira Terminal. If you are planning to get to the camp via public transport feel free to ask us and we will give you more information.

We recommend renting a car! In Portugal there are very cheap rental cars available that start at 80€ per week. At Sunny Cars you'll find the cheapest rental cars around! Getting a rental car will allow you to spontaneously explore the coastline or nearby Lisbon. It will also give you the freedom to take early morning drives up the coast to go to your favourite surf spot.
